Common questions

Everything we get asked before booking Explora Journeys.

General answers — specifics vary by sailing, suite category, and season. We confirm every detail against your itinerary in writing before you commit.

General

The Line

What is Explora Journeys?

Explora Journeys is a modern luxury ocean travel brand from the MSC Group, launched in 2023. Its fleet (Explora I, II, with III–VI on the way) sails under 1,000 guests in all ocean-front suites, with a genuinely all-inclusive model and a European design sensibility. It sits between traditional luxury cruise lines (Silversea, Regent) and the new yacht-style category (Ritz-Carlton, Four Seasons).

Ship Size

How many guests sail on each Explora ship?

Each ship carries roughly 900 guests at double occupancy across 461 suites. Public spaces, pools, and restaurants are sized for that capacity — never feels crowded, and there is no inside cabin or obstructed view anywhere on the ship.

Who It's For

Who is Explora Journeys best for?

Travelers who care about space, quiet, and considered service over ports-per-week. It's especially strong for adult couples, honeymooners, milestone celebrations, multigenerational groups of adults, and travelers stepping up from premium hotels into cruising for the first time.

The Difference

What makes Explora different from a traditional cruise?

Smaller ships, all ocean-front suites with private terraces, a truly all-inclusive model, longer port days with frequent overnights, and a European editorial sensibility around design and food. It feels closer to a private yacht than a cruise.

Suites & onboard

Suite Categories

Which Explora suite should I book?

Terrace orientation, deck position, and how much time you'll spend in the room matter more than the category name. Ocean Terrace suites work for most travelers; Ocean Penthouses and Residences buy more space and forward views. This is the single most common reason people work with us — getting the right suite at the right price.

Accessibility

Are Explora ships accessible for travelers with mobility needs?

Yes. Each ship has accessible suites in several categories and step-free access across all public decks, pools, and restaurants. Tender ports (where the ship anchors and guests transfer by small boat) can be limiting depending on sea state — we flag those before you book.

Dietary Needs

Can Explora accommodate dietary restrictions and allergies?

Yes. Gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan, kosher, halal, and allergen-specific menus are handled across all nine restaurants. Share preferences at booking and the culinary team flags them at every seating.

Dress Code

What is the dress code onboard?

Refined casual throughout the day. Evenings lean elevated-resort: jackets are welcomed, never required, and there are no formal nights. Anvil and Sakura request smart attire; the others are deliberately relaxed.

Kids Onboard

Are children welcome on Explora?

Children are welcome at any age and there is a Nautilus Club program. That said, the ship is not built around kids — no waterslides, no character programming. Multigenerational trips with teens and adult children tend to do best.

What's included

Inclusions

What's included in an Explora Journeys fare?

All nine restaurants, premium wines, beers, spirits, and cocktails, in-suite minibar, specialty coffees, high-speed Wi-Fi, group fitness and wellness classes, gratuities, and port shuttles where available. Most port taxes are included.

Not Included

What's not included?

Spa treatments, shore excursions, the rarest reserve wines and spirits, salon services, and laundry beyond what your suite category includes. We'll budget honestly for these alongside the fare.

Gratuities

Are gratuities included?

Yes. There is no automatic daily service charge and no expectation to tip individual crew. Additional gratuities are at your discretion and never solicited.

Wi-Fi

Is Wi-Fi fast enough to actually work onboard?

Yes for most needs — email, browsing, streaming, and video calls on calm seas. Bandwidth tightens in remote regions. Travelers planning to work full-time onboard should plan around it rather than count on it.

Airfare & travel

Airfare

Is airfare included in the fare?

No. Explora offers an optional air program with negotiated business and first class fares, which is sometimes the best price and sometimes not. We compare against direct booking, points, and partner fares before recommending a path.

Pre & Post Stays

Can I extend the trip before or after the sailing?

Yes — and most clients should. We build pre- or post-cruise stays through our Virtuoso network in cities like Lisbon, Reykjavík, Istanbul, Cape Town, and Tokyo, with on-the-ground transfers and preferred rates.

Transfers

Are transfers from the airport to the ship included?

Only when booked through Explora's air program or as part of a pre/post package. We typically arrange private transfers separately for a smoother arrival.

Booking & payment

Booking & Payment

How does booking and payment work?

Typically a 25% deposit is due at booking with the balance due roughly 120 days before sailing. Payment is by credit card, wire, or check. Exact deposit and final-payment dates are sailing-specific and we'll confirm them in writing before you commit.

Advisor Fee

Do you charge a fee to plan an Explora sailing?

No. Fares are identical to what you'd see on Explora's site. We're compensated by the cruise line, and we layer agency amenities and onboard credit on top at no cost to you.

Solo Travelers

Can I sail Explora solo, and what about the single supplement?

Yes — Explora is a strong fit for solo travelers given the calm onboard vibe. A single supplement applies on most sailings (typically 25–100% over the per-guest fare). On select sailings we can secure reduced or waived supplements through preferred-partner promotions.

Timing

How far in advance should I book?

Twelve to eighteen months out gives the best suite selection and promotional stacking. Inside six months we can still find good options, but the best suites and connecting configurations go early.

Cancellation, changes & insurance

Insurance

Do I need travel insurance for an Explora sailing?

Strongly recommended at this price point. We coordinate independent policies (medical evacuation and cancel-for-any-reason cover) rather than upselling Explora's in-house product, so the coverage is broader and travels with you beyond the sailing.

Guest Cancellation

What is the cancellation policy if I need to change plans?

Explora's standard schedule applies penalties on a sliding scale starting roughly 120 days before departure, increasing as the sailing approaches. A cancel-for-any-reason policy is usually the right hedge — we walk you through the schedule before deposit.

If Explora Cancels

What happens if Explora cancels or changes the sailing?

In a full cancellation, Explora typically offers a Future Cruise Credit plus the option of a cash refund. For itinerary changes (skipped or substituted ports), compensation depends on the change. We advocate on your behalf in either case.

Missed Ports

What if the ship misses or substitutes a port?

It happens, usually for weather or operational reasons. The captain and shoreside teams substitute where possible. Pre-booked third-party excursions are your responsibility to recover, which is one more reason we lean on flexible, refundable bookings ashore.

Onboard experience

Dining Reservations

Do I need to reserve restaurants in advance?

Reservations open before sailing for Anvil (steakhouse), Sakura (Japanese-Peruvian), and Marble & Co. (grill). The other restaurants run on walk-in or same-day booking. We pre-book the hard-to-get tables for clients.

Tenders

Which ports require tenders and how does that work?

A handful of smaller harbors require the ship to anchor offshore with guests transferring by tender. Tender priority is offered to guests booked on the ship's excursions; independent travelers join the open queue. We flag tender ports at booking.

Overnights

Why do Explora itineraries include so many overnights in port?

It's deliberate. Overnights in places like Santorini, St. Barths, Istanbul, and Hong Kong let you actually have an evening ashore — dinner, a walk back through quiet streets — instead of being back on the ship by 6 PM.

Working with an advisor

Why an Advisor

Should I book Explora Journeys through a travel advisor?

Yes, if you want a real person who knows the ships, suites, and sailings worth your time. Fares are identical to what you'd see on Explora's site, and we layer agency amenities, onboard credit, and suite selection booking engines won't surface.

Perks

What preferred-partner perks can you actually add?

Depending on sailing and suite category, perks can include shipboard credit, specialty dining or spa credit, premium beverage upgrades, excursion credit, and occasional suite-category upgrades. We frame these honestly — they vary sailing-to-sailing.

Getting Started

What's the easiest way to start?

Take the 30-second quiz. It tells us how you actually travel — pacing, suite priorities, ports that matter — and we come back with two or three sailings that genuinely fit, not a brochure dump.

Ready when you are

Have a question we didn't answer?

The quiz is the easiest way to start. Ninety seconds and we'll come back with sailings that genuinely fit.
