Barcelona is a fine place to begin: the port is grand, the city rewards a day or two before boarding, and the eastward light on the water at departure is genuinely hard to leave. The ship moves south through the Strait of Gibraltar to Ceuta, where Spain holds a small piece of the African continent, and on to Casablanca — Morocco at its most composed, with wide boulevards and a harbor that has been receiving ships for centuries. From there the route turns southwest into the open Atlantic. Lanzarote arrives like nothing else on this voyage or most others: a volcanic interior, black lava fields, and an architecture that decided restraint was the right response to all of it. Tenerife is bigger, greener, and worth a full day on foot. La Gomera is quieter still, the Canaries as they were before the crowds arrived. Funchal on Madeira is the ideal note to end on before Lisbon: a city of cliffsides and levadas and old hotels that don't need to try hard. The voyage closes in Lisbon, which has the decency to be one of the best cities in Europe.

Gustavia on St. Barths is the anomaly: genuinely stylish, genuinely French, a harbor lined with yachts and a town that knows exactly what it is. Basseterre on St. Kitts rounds out the eastern arc before the ship turns back toward Miami. Seven nights, five island stops, nothing overcrowded.

Naha on Okinawa is subtropical and distinct, closer culturally to the old Ryukyu Kingdom than to Tokyo. The Miyako Islands and Ishigaki are the furthest south: shallow reefs, flat light, and water that has no right to be that color. Shanghai follows, which is its own kind of calibration: enormous, fast, relentlessly present. Hong Kong closes the voyage on a high note, with a harbor that earns every photograph taken of it.

Copenhagen is an easy place to begin: good food, good light, the kind of city that doesn't need to explain itself. The ship moves south to Hamburg before turning north and west: Southampton, then into the open Atlantic toward Ireland. Greencastle in County Donegal is the kind of port that doesn't come with crowds, which is the point. Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis sits at the edge of the Outer Hebrides, where the landscape stops pretending to be gentle. Oslo follows on the return arc, then Lysekil on Sweden's west coast, quieter than it has any right to be this close to a major port. The ship ends in Iceland, where Seydisfjordur arrives first, a fjord village of painted houses and waterfalls that looks like it was placed there for the specific purpose of making you reconsider your life. Akureyri and Reykjavik close the voyage on terms that are genuinely hard to leave.

Vancouver is the right place to set out from: a city at the edge of something much larger, with the mountains already visible from the harbor. The Inside Passage begins immediately, a narrow corridor of protected water flanked by coast so dense and green it doesn't register as wilderness until you've been watching it for a while. Ketchikan is the first stop, totem poles and fishing boats and rain that everyone there has made their peace with. The ship works north through Wrangell, Sitka, Icy Strait Point, and Juneau before reaching Skagway, which wears its gold rush history with the enthusiasm of a town that has decided that's its best story. Then the glacier crossings: the Hubbard, which calves ice the size of apartment buildings; the Icy Bay, where the silence is total. Seward and Valdez bring the voyage back toward the human scale before Vancouver closes the loop. Fourteen nights, and none of them the same.
